About me
Welcome to my photography website! My name is David Lapins and I live in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa, Ontario. My passion for capturing the beauty of the natural world began in early 2024, when I was playing professional water polo in Australia and made an impulse decision to buy my first real camera. During my time in Australia, I was particularly mesmerized by the vibrant and diverse birdlife that surrounded me. It was through photographing these incredible Australian birds that I truly fell in love with photography and realized how powerful it can be to preserve short-lived moments in nature.
My connection to the natural world extends beyond photography—it's also the foundation of my career. I have a deep love for environmental science, which led me to pursue a master's degree in limnology from Carleton University in Ottawa, following a Bachelor of Science in geography from the University of Calgary. My studies in the science of freshwater ecosystems have further fueled my passion for preserving the beauty of the natural world and have inspired me to use photography as a tool to raise awareness about the importance of conservation. I use my photography as a means of performing citizen science, contributing to data collection and supporting the understanding of biodiversity and ecological changes.
In addition to my work as a photographer and scientist, I have been a proud member of the Canadian National Water Polo Team since 2010. Through my sport, I’ve had the privilege of traveling the world and living abroad, experiencing diverse cultures and unique life moments along the way. These global experiences have shaped my perspective and enriched my photography, allowing me to capture the world’s beauty from many different angles. Through my lens, I hope to share the wonders of nature and inspire others to appreciate and protect our planet.
